Thick hair needs the 40 mm Coanda barrel and the firm smoothing brush — and a willingness to take 25–30 minutes for a full styling session. Here's the right Dyson Airwrap setup for thick hair, plus realistic expectations on what's achievable.

Pick the Complete Long over the Origin. The Long includes the 40 mm Coanda barrel and the firm smoothing brush — both essential for thick hair. The Origin's smaller kit doesn't include the firm brush, which means longer sessions and weaker results on thick textures.

Use medium fan + medium-high heat across the board. Thick hair needs more force and more heat to shape. Don't max either — the Airwrap caps at 150°C and stays gentler than a standard iron, but you do need the higher of the two heat settings on dense, coarse hair.

Section into 8–10 parts instead of the typical 4–6. Smaller sections per pass means each piece of hair actually gets the airflow it needs to wrap. Trying to do thick hair in big sections is the most common reason styling fails.

Plan 25–30 minutes for a full session. The Supersonic dries faster than the Airwrap's pre-styling attachment on thick hair, so consider drying with the Supersonic first, then switching to the Airwrap for shaping. The Coanda smoother attachment is essential at the end to seal the cuticle on thick hair — without it, frizz creeps back within an hour.
